Paul Dousts new adaptation embraces the book with a stylistic exuberance Financial Times
The orphan Flora Poste, heroine of this tongue-in-cheek classic rural novel, likes everything to be tidy, pleasant and comfortable. When she goes to live with her eccentric relatives at Cold Comfort Farm, she does her best to alter her surroundings and encourage those around her to greater things. This proves difficult, as Grandmother Ada Doom, who saw something narstyin the woodshed, insists on keeping all her family around her. The family members include:
Judith Starkadder playing age 40-60. Lonely, desperate, obsessed with her son Seth Starkadder playing age 20-40. Handsome, brooding, a directionless philanderer. Elfine Starkadder playing age 18-25. Wont to wander the hills in a poetic trance. Amos Starkadder playing age 40+. Stern, humourless, a preacher at the meetings of the Quivering Brethren. Reuben Starkadder playing age 25-45. Hard-working, obsessed with his farm. Urk Starkadder playing age 30-45. Coarse, rough and infatuated with Elfine. Adam Lambsbreath playing age 40-70. His two great loves are his cows and Elfine. Rennet playing age 25-45. Unlucky in love. Frequently throws herself down the well.
Flora Poste playing age 18-25. Industrious, resourceful and relentlessly cheerful. Aunt Ada Doom playing age 50-80. Completely barmy and totally in control.
There are also many other parts, including Floras beau Charles, the Hawk-Monitors and a chorus, who link the scenes and perform a variety of roles.
The play is absolutely hilarious and caused one of the funniest play readings on record at BTC. It is, however, technically complicated and requires a top-notch crew. If you would like to get involved backstage in this production, please call Louise on 07515 776618.
